Who is this for?

Anyone who has an existing account at an APAC partner site can start using grid services right away, and anyone who is planning on joining a project that uses resources at an APAC partner site can also apply.

Step 1. Get A Certificate

All grid services rely on Digital Certificates to identify you. APACGrid has a Certificate Authority, and operators (RAO's) at each site to approve certificate requests in person.

A digital certificate from the APACGrid Certificate Authority allows you to be identified on all the APAC compute resources. It comes in the form of a Public Certificate file, which is publicly available, and a Private Key file, which you must keep secret and encrypted, which you use to prove that you are the certificate holder. The certificate can also be loaded into your browser to allow you to use secure sites and services.

The complete instructions for requesting, approving and collecting an APACGrid Certificate can be found HERE Under "Grid Users: How to generate a User Certificate Request"

Step 2. Get Authorized

Your certificate can identify you, but you need authorization to use resources. There's two options for getting authorized.
  1. Grid Enable an existing account at an APAC partner site
  2. Join a Virtual Organization, and get access to a range of partner sites.

Grid enabling an existing account is a good first step for trying out the grid. You can also use VO accounts later on. See below for how to go about either option. You can do both if you want.

Step 3a. Grid enable an existing account

Once you've got your certificate loaded into your browser, you can grid-enable an account using the Grid Authorization Tool for a site. You can map and unmap yourself at any site where you have a valid login username and password. Your account will then be mapped to your browser certificate, so make sure you've got your certificate in your browser! For example, VPAC users with an APAC-GRID certificate can click on VPAC below, you will be prompted for your vpac username and password. Click on "map me", and you will be mapped. Note, new mappings are process on the hour at VPAC, so you will have to wait until then before your local mapping will work.

Site Authorization links are listed on the UserMapping page.

Step 3b. Get a VO Membership

You can sign up to APACGrid VO's using the Grix or https://vomrs.apac.edu.au:8443/vo/APACGrid/vomrs

Please see the VOMRS Howto The following outlines how the process of getting a Virtual Organisation Account will work.

To get a Virtual Organization Account on the APAC grid you can either join an existing project, or request a new project. See Project Creation Howto for details.

  • Typically you will be aware of the VO you need to be a member of, perhaps because you have just joined the team that the VO operates for.
  • The Project Leader of the VO will provide you with a web link to go to.
  • With your certificate loaded into your browser you go to the VOMRS link provided and register.
  • The Project Leader will (or will not) accept you into the VO and determine your capabilities there.

Each VO has compute quota on a range of compute resources around the country. For more information, ask your VO Administrator
