About ARCS managed file transfers - the file transfer service
On a high performance compute cluster a queuing system is used to ensure that only one process is using one processor. This is the most efficient way to use the processors in a cluster.
Similarly the proposed file transfer service ensures that only one data transfer is occurring at a time through a particular network interface. So its like a queuing system for data transfer. It also allows administrators to optimise the data transfer parameters for certain transfer paths and it gives the administrators the ability to signal users or applications if a transfer end point has become unavailable.
Status
ARCS is currently investigating the File Transfer Service which is part of the gLite software stack as a candidate. It has been implemented and is under prototype testing.
