Generally, most people can get and manage their certificates using the GRIX tool, however, its still possible to do so manually

Special instructions for a Host Certificate How to request a Host certificate

Step 1 Generate a Certificate Request
You need to generate a certificate request before proceeding.
Step 2 Submit a Certificate Request to the CA.
See this page for help with the online form and how you submit your certificate request. Includes the list of organisation names you can use on your certificate.
Step 3 Obtain approval for your Certificate.
Your certificate request must be approved by one of the people appointed as an RAO
Step 4 Collect and Install your Certificate
You need to collect your certificate and probably need to install it into a browser.
Step 5 (almost certainly for personal certificates) Join one or more Virtual Organisations?
