GridFTP is a protocol for network transfers using grid frameworks. GridFTP is part of the Globus toolkit and was designed for efficient and secure transfer of large data files. GridFTP uses extensions to the FTP protocol to add enhancements such as parallel transfers and automatic restart of transfer after interruption. Transfer tests have shown that GridFTP can make full use of available bandwidth. Common mechanisms data staging into grid compute jobs require the input data to be available on a GridFTP server. Likewise these same mechanisms stage the output data out to a nominated GridFTP server.
before you start
You will need a grid certificate See here about how to get one.
You need some GridFTP client software to be able to transfer your data from your desktop, or other machine, to a GridFTP server. The client tools can also be used to transfer data between GridFTP servers - this is called third party transfer.
See here for information about GridFTP client tools.
